Overview

Nereus is software infrastructure designed to tame the data deluge with cost-effective, supercomputer-like capacity to process, transform, and indeed channel it for our benefit.
It does this by leveraging the spare capacity of computing resources on the "edge" of the Internet - resources which generally use only a small fraction of their capacity even when busy and are available for marginal operating cost and environmental impact - and allowing users and developers to combine and coordinate them in novel, dynamic ways.
In order to assure the safety of these edge resources, Nereus builds upon Java applets, the best established security context for running untrusted, third-party code on the Internet; the use of this technology also seamlessly extends the reach of Nereus across different platforms, operating systems, and even enterprises.
The combination of Nereus and JPC is particularly powerful, offering bullet-proof security and the widest possible scope for executing code written for the world's most popular computing platform.
In principle, the Nereus network could encompass all the world's network-attached computers, providing an aggregate capacity 100 times greater than the 500 most powerful supercomputers combined.

Why Nereus?

Cross Platform

Nereus is completely implemented in Java and so works seamlessly across all major computing platforms, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

Secure

Nereus executes work on behalf of users inside a rigid security manager, in the same way a Java applet is "sandboxed" inside your web browser when you view a page containing it.

Scalable

Unlike most "grid" technology, the Nereus network architecture is inherently scalable and has been designed from the ground up to enable users to marshal the combined resources of the world's approximately 2 billion computing devices.

Easy to Install

Nereus can run as an applet on a web page, so that joining the Nereus network can be as simple as clicking on a web page. Alternatively, Nereus can be installed as a persistent service on a host machine within minutes.

Nereus presents a simple programming API so that any Java program can be adapted easily to run on the Nereus network.
